Hello my friends, it's been two weeks since Super Bowl XLVI and I don't know about you but I'm already feeling NFL withdrawal! It was such a great season with so much drama, excitement, energy and any other adjective you can come up with, may it be good or bad depending on what team you supported.
For me, the big stories from this past season start with Eli Manning and the Giants taking down the combination of Brady and Belichick on the big stage to be crowed World Champs. From there I go to Green Bay, a team that just one year ago did the same thing the Giants did this year - they got hot at the right time, and with their backs against the wall and more injuries than we could believe became World Champions. The Packers came into this season looking like the favourites to win the Super Bowl again, especially after only losing one game going into the Playoffs. They dismantled their opponents week in and week out only to fall to the Giants in the second round of the Playoffs.
The next story to catch my eye in 2011 would be Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Brees has to be in there for his record breaking season but also because he got his team to play so well with him all year. Next for me would be the defensive play of the San Francisco 49ers, not allowing a rushing TD until Week 16, and the unbelievable coaching Job Harbaugh did in bringing that team from one of the worst teams to being in contention for a Super Bowl bid. I can't talk about this season without discussing the other Harbaugh in Baltimore and the great job that team did this year, only to be done in by their own Kicker. I think this shows just how important the job of the Kicker and Special Teams are to the success of a team. The other story would be the unbelievable impact, or lack thereof, of one player - Peyton Manning.
The other big story is that the Sky team took the show to the next level and I was privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Kevin Cadle and Neil Reynolds and the whole production team at Sky more than I have in the past.
In addition to being on the Sky, I was able to visit a host of American Football teams in areas around the UK; Birmingham University Lions, Bristol Aztecs, Kingston University Cougers and the University of Stirling in Scotland. It is because of these visits that we will be bringing 8-10 former NFL players and coaches to put on an American Football camp and coaches clinic. Stay tuned for more information on this following me at my twitter cecilmartin1.
