Peppers puts pen to paper

24 June 2009 8:19 PM - Henry Hodgson

Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers has signed his one-year, $16.7 million tender.

The Panthers applied the franchise tag on Peppers in February, but failed to work out a long-term contract or trade. Peppers had said he wanted to be traded if the Panthers placed their franchise tag on him.

The Panthers still could trade Peppers, but it appears they prefer to keep their elite pass rusher.

"Over the past few months, we have had regular communication with Carl Carey, Julius' representative, and all indications were that Julius would be signed to report to training camp," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement released by the team. "Julius obviously is a very valuable member of our team, and we look forward to the 2009 season."

Peppers, a four-time Pro Bowler in seven NFL seasons, ranks first in Panthers history with 70.5 sacks, 24 forced fumbles and eight blocked kicks. Last season, he started in all 16 games and led the team with a career-high 14.5 sacks to go along with 51 tackles, 29 quarterback hurries, five forced fumbles and five passes defensed.

Peppers' 14.5 sacks tied for the second-highest single-season total in Panthers history - Kevin Greene also had 14.5 in 1996. Greene holds the record with 15 sacks in 1998.
