Eye on the US: Tuesday

Paolo Bandini continues his new daily column which recaps all the latest stories from overnight.

Derek Carr was only the fourth quarterback selected in May’s NFL Draft, coming in behind Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel. But he will be the only rookie quarterback to start on the opening weekend of the NFL season, after Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that Carr had won the job ahead of veteran Matt Schaub.

Preseason performances would appear to have been a determining factor. Carr threw for three touchdowns during the Raiders’ 41-31 win over Seattle on Thursday, including two against the Seahawks’ vaunted starting defense. "Gosh he was really good," said Seattle’s head coach Pete Carroll afterwards. "I thought the Raiders played great tonight. Jeez, they tore us up in every way.”

So who is Derek Carr? ESPN broke down his numbers, noting that he struggled when subjected to pressure in college and that he was fond of the screen pass for Fresno State. But if you wanted to know a little more about Carr’s back story, then this fine SBNation piece from May gives a nice flavour of the struggles the quarterback has gone through in his personal life, and what it was like growing up as the younger brother of another NFL quarterback.

Three more things you might have missed

- JJ Watt might just be the most disruptive defensive player in the entire league. And now he is in line to get paid like he is. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the player’s new six-year contract could pay him up to $100m.

- The latest edition of the Madden video game series has gifted players with a 1ft 2ins linebacker.

- Manny Pacquiao sings a karaoke tribute song to the NFL. Every bit as weird as it sounds.
