The game of NFL Flag Football is designed to appeal to girls and boys of all ages, sizes and sporting abilities, and is an ideal way of learning various skills relating to American football.
The British American Football Association (BAFA) and the NFL are committed to developing American football in the UK through Grass Roots initiatives – particularly by introducing NFL Flag Football into schools. NFL coaches provide school visits and training for teachers, parents and youth leaders who wish to add this game to their timetable.
Flag Football is a 5-a-side game of American football played between mixed teams of all ages. The physical side of the game is removed, instead teaching youngsters to pass, catch and run with the ball and tackle opponents by pulling a flag from their belt. This allows even the smallest player on a team to be able to tackle the biggest. Once the thrill of scoring a touchdown or making the vital tackle has been experienced, youngsters will be hooked on American football.
In order to start your own Flag football team you simply need to get together 10 players – five for each side – and a football. You can discover more about the intricacies of the game by visiting

Once you have got your team together you might want to find yourself a coach. If there is a suitable teacher or adult who wishes to act as your coach, they can find out more about the game and become a qualified Flag football coach by passing a one day Leaders Award, which is held locally and covers all aspects of the course. After that your school or club could receive a visit from an NFL or BAFA coach to supervise your instruction, and receive a starter pack consisting of footballs, flag belts, and an instruction pack.
Following a visit from the coaching team your school or club will be encouraged to participate in BAFA & NFL organised local tournaments.
Schools are invited to enter teams into the qualifying stages of the NFL World Flag Football Championship, a prestigious annual tournament that is hosted by countries across the world and allows Flag football players from every contitnent to meet up and play each other in a truly multicultural environment.
