15 Minutes of Fame

Name: Allan Murdoch

Position: Free Safety

Club: Manchester Titans

Age: 26

Nicknames: The obligatory Jocko and Howling Mad in BAFL and from my BCAFL University days Gigolo, a nickname that is now long undeserved!

How did you get into football:         I watched the game in the early nineties when it was on Channel 4 on Sunday nights. I became transfixed by the 49ers as a lot of newcomers to the sport where then. I played a lot of sports in my youth and didn’t really get a chance to play football until I went to University. Once I went to a few training sessions with the Clansmen at Stirling University I was hooked and I haven’t been away from the sport in the following 8 years.

Best Football Memory: Either winning the Scottish University title in 1998 with the Stirling Clansmen or the successful tour to Ireland with the Clansmen in the same year. We won the title beating Strathclyde away from home on the final day of the season, ending the game with an interception with only a few seconds left. It remains one of the best games I have ever been involved in.

The same year we went over to Ireland to play the Irish Champions at the time the Carrickfergus Knights. We beat them 12-0 and had a great time spending a week partying in Ireland.

Representing Scotland U21’s via the inaugural Claymores development squad is a proud memory also and provided me with exposure to the best coaching I have ever received.

Most embarrassing football memory: Has to be the first time you try to put on the kit. You are a rookie and everyone knows you haven’t a clue how to get it on and has a good giggle at you. I had my thigh pads in my kneepad sockets, I hadn’t a clue how to tie the belt and the coccyx pad confuses everyone! Now I get to have a giggle at the new guys on the Titans squad but it happens to everyone.

Favourite NFL team and Player: Well the 49ers will always be my team but right now I like to watch Ladainlian Tomlinson run and I love to watch Lorenzo Neal block for him. LDT is the most complete back in the league in my opinion. I also like watching Ed Reed and Rodney Harrison, those guys are who I watch to learn more about playing Free Safety.

If you could visit any NFL city  to watch a game where would it be: It would have to be San Francisco and Candlestick Park. To see my boys play at home would be a dream and San Francisco is a great town to spend a few days in. I managed to get to Lambeau Field this year and that stadium is one of the most atmospheric I have ever been in for any sport.

If you could sign a player from NFL history to play for your club who  would it be and why: Well the heart says Montana as he is the greatest football player I have ever seen, however I think a running back would do the most damage for the Titans. It would have to be a choice between Walter Payton or Barry Sanders. I think Payton just gets the nod as he is the best back I have ever seen but it would be good to see BAFL teams try to cope with Sanders, I think there might be a few “most embarrassing moments” in that game.

Ambitions in football: To help get the Titans to Division 1. Having played in all 3 divisions within BAFL I believe there is good potential in Manchester to build a very strong football team.

I would love to coach football in the future and have been completing my BAFCA coaching courses to enable me to this. The BAFCA programme I have found to be excellent.
