The United Kingdom has a thriving American football scene with thousands of players across the country kitting up each and every weekend.
The British American Football Association National Leagues features 50 senior teams playing across three divisions – Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 – and has produced several NFL players, including Super Bowl-winning British wide receiver Marvin Allen. The league also boasts a rather high- profile player in television celebrity Vernon Kay, who plays safety for the Premier Division’s London Warriors.
The BAFA National Leagues celebrate their end-of-season championship weekend each September. This year, BritBowl XXV will be held at London’s Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on September 24-25.
A further 58 teams are playing youth (14 to 17 year olds), junior (17 to 19 year olds) and flag (non- contact 5-a-side version of American football).
American football is one of the fastest-growing university sports in the United Kingdom. The British Universities American Football League (BUAFL) boasts more than 60 teams and more than 3,500 players and coaches from 46 countries around the world. The British college football season runs from October to March, with the annual championship game being held in Leeds.
